2 hour delay snow days are always the best.

Sorry, I haven’t updated in a long time! Studying for the last week of the term really threw me off the daily routine, but now that there’s room to get wired again, here are a few links to wander off to:

Exploring the website reminded me that its important to establish a relationship with the subject in order to be a good photographer. What really got me was when the woman said,

“I can look at a photo say, ‘Okay, now how is the photographer telling this story? What is the photographer trying to say? Is the photographer trying to say something? Is there a point of view there? or is it just…the photographer just showed up?”

Don’t just show up. Make your photo mean something.

Head over heart – Heart over head(?) How can you have an obligation to what your heart tells you when you know its lying?

Watch the 2006 Oscar nominated movie: Water and follow a Hindu couple’s journey to defy everything -their family, their religion, and their socioeconomic retraints- in order to love each other.  Outstanding cinematography. 10 awards well deserved.

Tonight, I’m busy applying for a full scholarship to a local college’s graphic design program and they decided to ask “What inspires you to make art?”.  

It was hard to say, actually. The generic answer would be EVERYTHING. Under the right conditions, the right timing, the right placement and the correct lighting anything has the potential to be eye candy. (I mean look at the bacon right? So delicious, I bet you’re already salavating) Especially, now a days, when we have photoshop, we have the ability to distort and transform the ordinary into a practically abstract and profound piece of art. We can become inspired and determined to challenge ourselves to make something out of nothing, but in the end, the matter of inspiration isn’t the discovery of a subject or a muse. Instead, what’s important is the reason why the specific pause in time was was chosen and the purpose it took on in conveying a message.

I think, that’s why I find myself hating the question the more I’ve attempted to answer it because it isn’t the simple ”what” it’s the “why”. This question has forced me to question work: I’m not taking tourists shots or egotistic photos like everyonelse. This is my way of documenting my perspective that gets overly neglected from time to time. I do this to prove my importance for myself but is that enough? Are my photographs enough to say that I’m worth something?

When we are at our most raw state, can others really understand and accept our identity? Laura’s simple portrait photography really delves into the gears of  the subconscious. She tends to illustrate its sense of vulnerablityand longful solitude in the eyes of her subjects. When I look at her photos, there’s something in all their stares that really latches onto me and my heart pleads to understand them but the possiblity is slant. I feel helpless.
